English Bulldogs - Puppies - Origin of the Breed

English Bulldogs were developed very carefully, through selective breeding. The origins of the breed come from the Alaunts and Pugnaces of ancient England, the Pug and the Mastiff. The breed's origin lies in the cruel sport of bull baiting. It originated in England in the 13th century. The Bulldog's purpose was to attack the bull by grabbing it by the nose. It was a spectacular entertainment popular with people belonging to different circles. However, the bull baiting was not considered a mere entertainment. The bull's meat was believed to be tastier, if the bull was baited before being slaughtered.

In 1835, the bull baiting was outlawed as cruel sport. There were efforts to make dog fighting as popular. However, English Bulldogs did not suit well for this purpose. Gradually, the English Bulldog became an amiable family pet.

English Bulldogs - Puppies - Upkeep

The English Bulldog cannot tolerate very cold and humid weather. It will not jog or run great distances or jump vigorously. Nevertheless, daily outings should be provided to keep the dog in a good physical form. Coat care is minimal in English Bulldogs. The facial wrinkles must be cleaned on the daily basis.

The English Bulldog is easily recognized by its "sourmug," which gives it the appearance of a gloomy and dangerous dog. Despite its seemingly evil nature, the English Bulldog is clownish, affectionate, and among the most amiable and docile dogs. English Bulldogs are suspicious toward strangers, which makes them good watchdogs.
